When to wash

Five key moments to supervise your child’s handwashing habits

There’s no magical age at which a child suddenly becomes reliable at washing her hands thoroughly. Most youngsters tend to skimp on this vital task when they’re tired or there are other things they’d rather do.

Before a Meal or Snack:

especially when she’s really hungry, or it’s her favourite food. You can help by supervising her, maybe also washing your hands alongside her to set a good example.

Immediately After School:

you can expect your child to be both hungry and tired. But thorough washing is essential for getting rid of grime accumulated during the school day.

After Any Outing:

particularly on trains and buses, ensure your child washes her hands thoroughly before rushing off to play or eat.

On Holiday:

it’s especially important to wash hands properly after visits to tourist attractions like theme parks, farm parks, and petting zoos.

In Public Toilets:

Your child may be tempted to rush hand-washing just to get it over with and get out. But it’s more necessary than ever to maintain good hygiene when using the toilet away from home.
