Health Check

10 Point checklist on taking symptoms more seriously:

Children catch numerous infections as they grow up. Fortunately, most illnesses are minor and can be treated at home.

Always check with your doctor if your child:

  1. Won’t play or smile
  2. Has a high fever that you can’t control (over 38.5C or 101.5F taken by mouth)
  3. Has severe or persistent pain anywhere
  4. Complains of tummy ache
  5. Has a dry mouth or sunken eyes
  6. Has clammy or mottled skin
  7. Is unusually drowsy or irritable
  8. Has a rash that won’t fade when pressed with a glass
  9. Has trouble breathing (is breathless, blue or struggling for breath)
  10. Has a convulsion (seizure or fit).

You should take any of the last five symptoms particularly seriously, and get help urgently. That means you should ring for an ambulance if the doctor can’t see your child right away,

Of course, no list of symptoms can be totally comprehensive. Remember to use your instincts. If your child seems ill to you, then she probably is.
